The summit, taking place February 15-20 at Bharat Mandapam, represents the first global AI summit hosted in the Global South and aims to shift the international AI conversation from potential to measurable impact, according to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
Homegrown AI Models Take Center Stage At the core of India’s sovereign AI push are foundation models developed by Bengaluru-based Sarvam AI, the BharatGen consortium at IIT Bombay, Gnani AI, and Fractal Analytics, each trained on vast Indian datasets and tailored to support the nation’s 22 official languages.
BharatGen is set to launch Param2, a 17-billion-parameter multilingual model supporting all scheduled Indian languages, according to Business Standard. The model, developed under the Technology Innovation Hub at IIT Bombay with support from the Department of Science and Technology, will demonstrate sector-focused applications across governance, healthcare, education, and financial services.
Sarvam AI’s latest models—Sarvam Vision and Bulbul V3—have reportedly outperformed Google Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT on India-specific benchmarks, while Gnani AI is unveiling a voice-first, multilingual system with “emotionally intelligent” capabilities. Infrastructure and Global Collaboration.
The government has deployed 38,000 GPUs—nearly four times the initial target of 10,000 units—to power the nation’s AI computing infrastructure, MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan announced during preparations for the summit. The models are being trained entirely on Indian datasets through the Bharat Data Sagar repository and hosted on domestic servers.
More than 15 heads of state and over 50 global technology leaders are attending, including Bill Gates, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen, and Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon.
The summit includes a Research Symposium scheduled for February 18, bringing together researchers from India and the Global South to present frontier work on AI’s societal impact. Seven working groups, co-chaired by representatives from both the Global North and South, will present proposals on shared compute resources and AI commons for the public good.
The India AI Impact Expo, opening February 16, will feature more than 300 exhibitors and 600 startups across 70,000 square meters, with 13 country pavilions highlighting international collaboration.
